Chapter 2: Barriers and Needs of female students and women to follow an ICT career path

Chapter 2 describes the problems and needs of girls and women to follow an ICT career path. It referes to the existing literature. The chapter gives an overview over the situation of female students in secondary school and their image of ICT education and professions and of female students in advanced ICT/new media education. It questions, why some of them drop out in advanced ICT education, what role models for female students exist and under which circumstances young women entering ICT professions work in the ICT sector. To conclude preliminary suggestions in according to the 3M-approach are made.

Chapter 3: Barriers and Needs for supporting women

In chapter 3 we explore the barriers and needs girls and young women face following an ICT career path. The chapter gives an analysis on the interviews made with representatives of the identified target groups and finally frames some recommendations on the development of specific training modules for young female students. The chapter is divided into underchapters refering the different target groups:

  • Target group I: Female students at the age of 13 to 16 years
  • Target group II: Female students at the age of 16 to 19+ years graduating at university
  • The situation of vocational counselors - especially in reformed countries
  • Perspectives on Human Resource Management in ICT companies
