Anne Gleitsmann is currently doing an IT training with Lufthansa Systems. This months she tells PRO::ICT why she decided to work in IT and gives some advice for other young women.

Name: Anne Gleitsmann

Age: 21 Years

Education: since August 2002 doing her vocational training in IT (Fachinformatikerin-Anwendungsentwicklung) at Lufthansa Systems in Kelsterbach

Job Orientation

When did you decide doing vocational training in IT?
Just after I passed my A-level I decided to go into IT. I was writing down the things I enjoy to do and I am interested in. This helped me a lot to make a decision. After I talked to a friend, who was already finished his It vocational training, I decided to become a Fachinformatikerin.

Why do you think did you choose this specific education?
During the end of Highschool I had the opportunity to do computer science which I liked a lot and also had good grates in. Even in my leisure time I started to do programming. But I haven`t been to interested in hardware or any technical details, so I decided to specialize in software programming.

Who supported you doing your career decision phase?
Mostly my parents and other relatives helped me to decide for the „right job“. Friends who already been working in this field could also give me some advice. School and also the employment agency haven`t been for anz helped in my case they justed informed me about „normal“ jobs.

What is needed to change career counselling?
Schools should much more inform about different job opportunities. For example it would be possible to invite people who already graduated and talk about their experiences and job career.

Educational training

Did your expectations and wishes about the vocational training come true?
I really like my training. It is excactly what I was expecting and wishing for. Sure there are moments which are not going so well but I guess this is normal.

What is it what you especially like in your vocational traning?
I especially enjoy the practical work. It is a great feeling to implement the theoretical knowledge and to get to known the usual working patterns in the different departments of the company.

Would you choose the same vocational training again?
I would every now and then decide for this profession. It is a great job which gives me a good base for gaining further qualification on top. This gives me a lot of opportunities after I finished my education.

You have the chance to do advertisment for your profession. Please give us some good reasons why to choose this job.
The job offers independent working in both a innovative and forward-looking job field. Plus the job offers many chances for further personal development because it is much more than just programming.

Differences women and men

Women are still underrepresented in IT profession, why do you think this is the case?
I think the reason why just a few girls entering IT is not that women have less technical knowledge or logical thinking. It is more that women are offered mostly typical women jobs in counselling. Surely it doesn`t mean that every girl has to go to male dominating profession but some young women are just missing a little kick into technical education.

What are some typical prejudices which maybe also appeared to you?
Women have less technical understanding and the can`t think logically. Women just get advantages from teachers or their bosses because they have a nice face.

What would you advice girls who also want to go into IT?
Be self-confident! IT Training is nothing more than any other vocational programms!
